Songbird Carvings
It’s easy to understand why so many of us are fond of songbirds. They have characteristics which we can easily
identify and they are our link with the natural world that lies beyond our walls. My fascination with songbirds comes
from watching their unique behaviors. Through the art of carving the attempt is made to capture the true essence of
the songbird and provide the collector with as much realism as possible.
Most of us see and hear songbirds every day of our lives. Of all the higher forms of life birds are the most watched.
Birds have always attracted man by their brilliant colors, songs and other vocalizations.
Songbirds are ideal subjects for carving since songbirds are colorful and active. They display a wide variety of
attitudes and postures that can be displayed in a carving to create interesting effects.
Give a group of bird carvers the same species to carve and paint and no two will look the same - all different and yet
all accurate. The birds carved really do look like the birds they are meant to be. Current bird carvers have individual
styles that are more diverse than they ever have been.
