| Through the decades waterfowlers and decoy manufacturers have devised decoys for luring ducks into shotgun range. Decoys are composed of plastic, foam and synthetic rubber. There are animated decoys, perimeter decoys, wind-sock, wing-flappers, tip-decoys and silhouette decoys all which, in my mind, provide no comparison to the wooden decoy A decoy, is a decoy, is a decoy. Right? A wood decoy designed and carved correctly provides a ride in the water that is most realistic. A good floating decoy has a hollowed body with a fixed and weighted keel for both upright and lateral balance. The keel provides a stability which allows the decoy to ride with natural balance rather than rolling from side to side; it makes the bottom of the decoy heavier than the top so that the decoy will upright itself after being tossed in the water; and the keel also provides the hole for attaching the anchor line. In addition the glass eyes sparkle providing an additional touch of realism. While the wooden decoy is more costly, you do not need many and with proper care a well made wooden decoy will last a lifetime. The wildfowl decoy is one of the last to be recognized as a work of art as well as a hunting device providing both artistic creativity combined with functionality. Many hand-carved decoys may well become that collector’s item of ever increasing value as with the antique decoys of today. |
