WHISPERING WINGS

Contemporary Antique Decoys

Decoys represent a unique form of American folk art with origins that go back some 2000 years. In the last 30
years the collecting of decoys has grown in leaps and bounds. As a result of supply and demand gone are the days
of an affordable antique decoy being found. The value of antique decoys has skyrocketed to where prices can
easily range into the six-figures or more with new auction records set every year. This has therefore set the price
range of the antique decoy well beyond the majority of the population interested in collecting decoys.
Thus, the contemporary decoy is born. This style of carving gives a collector the ability to own a decoy with the
characteristics of an original carving without the price of the actual antique. For the carver this provides an
opportunity to emulate well known carvers while adding one’s own personal carving style. The contemporary
antique decoy certainly doesn’t replace the original but compliments any vintage decoy collection.
